Phantom_02.JPG - One of the best known icons of the Cold War due to it's distinctive design. Maximum takeoof weight of 60,000 lb. and could carry 18,650 lb of weapons on nine external hardpoints. Since the F-8 Crusader was designed for close combat the F-4 had no internal cannon. That as eventually rectified as ar combat in Vietnam demanded visual confirmation of an enemy plane at which point it was usually too close for missles. So the F-4E had an externally mounted 20mm M61 Vulcan.
